After starting the 2008 season with 3 straight victories, the Rochester College men’s soccer team was staring at their 3rd straight defeat with 11.9 seconds to go in their match versus the Wildcats of Stockton-Culver College, Mo.
The Warriors returned to their possession style of play providing the Warriors with more opportunities on goal and considerable more possession time. The Wildcats however had a quick, decisive and well executed counter attack and were able to net the first goal just 11 minutes into the match. The Wildcats led 1-0 at halftime.
With the Warriors controlling the tempo of the game and searching for the tying goal, they had to fight off the Wildcats quick counter attack with sophomore goal keeper Brian Matlock, Lathrup, keeping the Warriors in the game with some huge saves.
Things looked bleak for the Warriors as time clicked off the clock, but they kept battling and were rewarded when sophomore AJ Wells, Lake Orion, slid a pass to senior Ibrahim Foryoh who was intentionally fouled at the top of the box. The clock was stopped at 12 seconds as senior Chris Hall, Birmingham, England set up for the free kick. With all the Warriors holding their breath and ready to crash the goal, Hall bent the ball around and over the Wildcat wall of players into the left side netting, eluding Stockton-Culver’s goal keeper and setting off a wild Warrior celebration. The final 11.9 seconds of regulation ticked off the clock with regulation play ending at 1-1.
Still somewhat excited by their turn of fortunes the Warriors had to gather themselves as the Wildcats pushed forward with their counter attack and struck the 1st and only opportunity of the first 10 minute overtime, with Matlock again making the save.

Sellers got the best of the Golden Eagles scoring on 2 of his 3 shots on goal and getting both of Warriors goals.
Sellers 1st goal, 3rd of the season, in the 12th minute of play put the Warriors up 1-0. Cornerstone's Chris Burgess, tied the game at 1-1 with a goal 7 minutes later. The score remained tied throughout the half, with each team recording 7 shots on goal.
The score remained tied throughout the 2nd half with Cornerstone holding an advantage in shots at 13 for the Golden Eagles and 3 for the Warriors. With regulation time expiring and the game remaining tied, the spent teams began the two 10 minute overtime periods in search of the “golden goal” that would end in victory.
The first 10 minute overtime ended with the Warriors having the advantage in shots 3 to 1, but the game remained tied.
The 2nd overtime period ended as soon at it began. 1:50 into the period, the Warriors earned a free kick, on a Cornerstone foul, about 25 yards from goal and Seller's bent the ball around the wall and into the upper corner of the net, setting off a joyous Warrior celebration. It was the third set piece the Warriors scored on in the tournament, and Sellers 2nd goal of the game and 4th of the season. Warrior sophomore goal keeper Brian Matlock, Southfield Lathrup, played all 110 minutes in goal making several athletic saves to give the Warriors a chance at victory. For the match Matlock made 9 saves on 20 shots allowing just the 1 goal. Under a blazing sun, on a hot day, the Rochester College Warriors outlasted the Grace Bible Tigers, coming away with a 3-1 victory in the first game of the Cornerstone men’s Soccer Tournament in Grand Rapids, Mi.
Similar to last seasons matchup the Tigers quickly scored first at the 1:24 mark of the first half on an unassisted goal by Tiger David Kyulu-Burgess. The ball barely eluded Junior Warrior goal keeper David Ristich, Waterford Kettering High School.
The Warriors gathered themselves and fought back to score the next two goals. Sophomore Jon Rokowski, Chippewa Valley, scored the Warriors 1st goal on an assist from freshman Justin Miller, Dakota High School, at the 16:43 mark. Miller would tally the Warriors go ahead goal on a Warrior set piece play unassisted, giving him his 1st assit and 1st goal of his collegiate career in one match.
The first half ended with the Warriors ahead 2-1 on the board and having 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. Ristich finished the 1st half in goal making 2 saves on 5 shots and allowing 1 goal.

ON The PITCH with Gutz 2006 USCAA National Champs! Building on our Success!
2008 EXPECTATIONS
The Warriors enter 2008 with the same goal each year, a National championship!
We closed out the 2007 National Championship run with a fifth place finish after losing in the 1st round match on penalty kicks, 5 to 4 to Concordia of Selma Alabama. It was a tough way to lose, but considering we won the 2006 National Championship by converting on the PK shootout, we were thankful for the opportunity.
Assistant Coach Henderson and I have been working at putting together a plan to ensure that our Men's program remains consistently competitive every season.
Looking ahead to the fall of ’08, the USCAA National Tournament and National Championship is the primary goal for the Warriors. We lost some senior players to graduation who were major contributors to the 2006 National Championship. However, we have a strong class of 7 seniors returning, who also were a part of the National Championship team.
An extremely talented group of midfielders will return in Seniors Ibrahim Foryoh, Chris Hall and Billy Wineland. All can compete at the highest level of competition with their skill and ability. They will be bolstered by returning Sophomores AJ Wells, John Wineland, Jon Rokowski and Bernard Kanjoma. Also expected to contribute immediately are newcomers Justin Miller, Anthony Johnson, and Jamal Jones.
The fullbacks will be young and are also extremely talented. Leading the way will be returning Senior James Renton and Kevin Stillwell. Sophomores, Scott Rourke and Mike Bollan will be counted on heavily. Incoming Freshman Justin Mainero, Chris Gerhardt, Kevin Chouinard, Brian Bollan and newcomer, senior Matt McFarland, are all solid defenders who enjoy the new philosophy of attacking out of the back and are expected to contribute immediately.
The Warrior attack is blessed with speed, intelligence and technical ability. Returning at Striker will be Senior Trevor Wilson. He will be joined by leading scorer from 2007 Sophomore Justin Sellers. Joining them will be a strong incoming freshman class including Josh Reese, Josh Ford, David Scott, and Josh Proffitt.
All of the Warriors are excited with the return of our only junior, Goal Keeper David Ristich. David was the key to our National Championship victory. Returning Sophomores Brian Matlock, who also will see time at the striker position, and Steven Jesinowski, will compete for the Goal Keeper position.
With the versatility of all the players, each player is capable of playing any position without a drop in performance.
Our 2008 schedule will include at least 20 games, a friendly with Wayne State University, and the National Tournament. We will be playing fellow USCAA schools, NAIA and NCAA Division III programs. We will also have a return match versus NCAA DII Saginaw Valley State.
Our most important objective is to focus on the future of the program by recruiting quality players who can contribute immediately and be the foundation for future Championships.
Though we have solid upper class leadership, our future is being laid with our sophomore and freshman classes. It is an exciting time for the Rochester College Men’s Soccer program. We feel blessed.
